AMC Space-A travel

AMC Space-A Travel is Air Mobility Command's public information hub for Space-Available ("Space-A") travel — the program that lets eligible service members, retirees, and their families fly on DoD aircraft when seats remain open after all mission and Space-Required requirements are met. What it is

Space-A travel allows authorized passengers to occupy DoD aircraft seats that are surplus after Space-Required (duty) passengers are accommodated; it costs the traveler nothing in airfare but is offered strictly on a non-mission-interference, no-guarantee basis. Eligible categories, ranked I through VI, are defined by DoD Instruction 4515.13, "Air Transportation Eligibility," and range from emergency-leave travel down to retirees and their dependents. As of March 26, 2026, AMC introduced a new online AMC Travel Self-Signup Tool for Space-A and Space-R travel at all AMC locations, replacing the older process of emailing individual passenger terminals to get on a flight roster; in-person walk-up signup at the terminal remains available as an alternative.

Who operates it

Air Mobility Command (AMC), a U.S. Air Force major command headquartered at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, serves as the single manager, on behalf of U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), for military Space-Available travel, and administers the Space-A program and its public travel site. Passenger terminal operations are run locally by the AMC/Air Force units at each installation.

The AMC Travel Site itself is public information, open to anyone. Actually flying Space-A requires meeting one of the DoDI 4515.13 eligibility categories (active duty, retirees, dependents, and other specified groups) and registering for a specific flight, now primarily through the AMC Travel Self-Signup Tool at gatesea.mtmc.gov, a U.S. Government information system restricted to authorized users.

Logisticians and travel managers reference the AMC site to point eligible personnel and their families to authoritative eligibility rules, terminal contact information, and the current signup process, rather than relying on third-party trackers of variable accuracy. Passenger terminal contact listings (phone, DSN, and email per base) help travelers reach the specific installation processing their flight.
