Acquisition Advice Codes (AAC)
Acquisition Advice Codes (AAC) are single-character codes in the Federal Logistics Information System that tell a requisitioner how, and under what restrictions, an item of supply is acquired — stocked and issued, local purchase, terminal, condemned, or restricted. This is the complete A–Z reference, defined in the FLIS Procedures Manual (DoD 4100.39-M, Volume 10, Table 58) and used across DLMS/MILSTRIP requisitioning.
Allowance Type Codes (ATC)
A Navy Allowance Type (AT) Code is a single-digit numeric code carried in a ship's inventory records that identifies the reason material is being carried in stock — the basis on which the allowance was established. It distinguishes, for example, an item allowed by the ship's Coordinated Shipboard Allowance List (COSAL) from an AVCAL/load-list item, a non-COSAL demand-based item, a TYCOM-authorized add, an economic-retention item, or a substitute. The AT Code is read on the ship's allowance and inventory records (in supply systems such as RSupply) to tell a logistician the authority and basis behind each line item's allowance. The complete set of codes 1 through 9 is defined in NAVSUP P-485, Volume II, Appendix 9 (Logistics Management Codes), Part C — Allowance Type Codes, and reproduced in the COSAL Use and Maintenance Manual (NAVSUP P-488, Figure 33).
Controlled Inventory Item Codes (CIIC)
The Controlled Inventory Item Code (CIIC) is a one-character code (alphabetic, numeric, or the $ symbol) carried in Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS) cataloging data that identifies the extent and type of special handling an item requires in storage and transportation. It spans three segments: security classification codes (Confidential through Top Secret, cryptologic, Restricted Data), sensitive-item codes keyed to the arms/ammunition/explosives (AA&E) Security Risk Categories I–IV and controlled substances, and pilferage codes for materiel especially subject to theft. Defined in FLIS Table 61 (DoD 4100.39-M, Volume 10) and governed by DoDM 4140.01, DoDM 5200.01, and DoDM 5100.76, the CIIC must remain compatible with the item's DEMIL code per FLIS Table 192.
Demilitarization (DEMIL) Codes
Demilitarization (DEMIL) Codes are single-character, life-cycle codes assigned to DoD personal property that state what must physically happen to an item before it can leave DoD control — from no action required (A) through mutilation to the point of scrap (B, Q) to total destruction of the item and its key points (C, D) and declassification (P). The code is assigned by the Integrated Materiel Manager, verified by the DoD Demilitarization Coding Management Office, and carried in the Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS, Table 38). It works together with the DEMIL Integrity Code and the Controlled Inventory Item Code (CIIC) to keep U.S. Munitions List and Commerce Control List items out of the wrong hands at disposal.
Disposal Condition Codes (DCC)
Disposal Condition Codes (DCC) are single alpha-numeric characters that describe the physical condition of property at the point of disposal — graded 1 through 9 from unused/good down through repairs-required, plus X (salvage) and S (scrap). The DCC is the second character of the legacy two-character Federal Condition Code, paired with the alphabetic Supply Condition Code (SCC). The full set is published in NAVSUP P-485 Volume II (Appendix 10, Part P). Important currency note: the current DoD disposal turn-in document (DD Form 1348-1A) records the alphabetic Supply Condition Code — not a numeric DCC — per the DoD Defense Materiel Disposition Manual (DoDM 4160.21) and DLM 4000.25 Vol 2; ADC 1360 removed the DCC from the DLMS supply transactions. The numeric DCC remains useful for reading the two-character Federal Condition Code on legacy records.
Document Identifier Codes (DIC)
Document Identifier Codes (DIC) are the three-position alphanumeric codes that occupy the first three card-columns of every MILSTRIP and MILSTRAP logistics transaction and declare its purpose — requisition, supply status, shipment status, follow-up, modification, cancellation, or materiel release. This reference lists the complete MILSTRIP A-series DIC set — all 178 codes published in NAVSUP P-485 Volume II, Appendix 4, Part B — plus the MILSTRAP materiel receipt acknowledgement family (DRA, DRB, DRF), governed by DLM 4000.25-1 (MILSTRIP) under the Defense Logistics Management Standards (DLMS).
DoD Advice Codes (MILSTRIP Advice Codes)
A MILSTRIP Advice Code is a two-position numeric/alphabetic (or numeric/numeric) code a requisitioner enters on a single requisition transaction to give the supply source special handling instructions — for example, do not substitute, do not backorder, furnish the exact quantity, fill or kill, or free issue. It is entirely distinct from the one-character Acquisition Advice Code (AAC) that is a permanent characteristic of the National Stock Number. This is the reference to the commonly cited DoD-wide (2-series) Advice Codes, defined in DLM 4000.25, Volume 2, Appendix AP7.15 (Advice Codes).
DoD Shelf-Life Codes (SLC)
A Shelf-Life Code (SLC) is a one-position code assigned to a National Stock Number that identifies the number of months of original shelf life and whether that period is non-extendible (Type I) or extendible (Type II). Code 0 means the item is non-deteriorative (not a shelf-life item). Alphabetic codes (every letter except X) identify Type I — non-extendible — items with a definite, fixed shelf life. Numeric codes (1–9), plus X, identify Type II — extendible — items whose shelf life can be lengthened after a prescribed inspection, test, or restorative action. The full code-to-period mapping is set in DoD Manual 4140.27, Volume 1, Section 6, Table 1. The Shelf-Life Code is governed by the DoD Shelf-Life Management Program (DoD Manual 4140.27, formerly DoD 4140.27-M), administered for DoD by the Defense Logistics Agency.
FLIS Criticality Codes & the Federal Item Identification Guide (FIIG)
The Criticality Code (CRIT CD) is a one-position code carried in the Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS) cataloging management data for a National Stock Number. It flags that an item is technically critical — by reason of tolerance, fit restrictions, application, nuclear-hardness properties, or other characteristics that affect how the item is identified — and it is the field through which Critical Safety Items (CSIs) and Flight Safety Critical Aircraft Parts are identified in FLIS. It is distinct from the Controlled Inventory Item Code (CIIC), which governs security, sensitivity, and pilferage controls. The related Federal Item Identification Guide (FIIG) is the cataloging guide that prescribes the standard requirements and format for describing and identifying an item of supply in the Federal Catalog System. Both are governed by DoD Manual 4100.39 (formerly DoD 4100.39-M), the FLIS Procedures Manual.
Hazardous Material Indicator Code (HMIC)
A Hazardous Material Indicator Code (HMIC) is a code carried in the Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS) catalog data for a National Stock Number that flags whether an item is a known or suspected hazardous material and, broadly, what hazardous-material information is available for it. It serves two jobs: it alerts a procuring activity that a hazardous item requires a Safety Data Sheet and the associated handling, storage, transport, and disposal controls, and it tells Federal Catalog System users whether detailed data exists in the Hazardous Materials Information Resource System (HMIRS). There are four values — Y, D, P, and N — defined in the FLIS Procedures Manual (DoD Manual 4100.39), Volume 10, Table 179, and the code is closely tied to Federal Standard 313 (FED-STD-313) and the DoD Shelf-Life and disposal programs.
Julian Date Calendar (Ordinal Date)
In military logistics, the "Julian date" is the ordinal date — the day of the year numbered 001 through 365 (366 in a leap year). It is the date format embedded in the MILSTRIP document number: six characters of DoDAAC, then a four-digit Julian date (YDDD — one digit for the year, three for the day of the year), then a serial number. This reference explains the format, gives the perpetual ordinal-date calendar (the day number that begins each month, for common and leap years), shows how to convert any calendar date to and from its ordinal day, and flags the two things that trip people up: the single-digit year is ambiguous across decades, and every day from March 1 onward shifts by one in a leap year.
Material Control Code (MCC)
A Material Control Code (MCC) is a single alphabetic character, assigned by the inventory manager, that segregates an item by how it is managed — into more manageable groups by demand velocity (fast, medium, or slow mover) or to relate special reporting and/or control requirements to field activities, such as field-level or depot-level repairables. In Navy supply it is one of the Logistics Management Codes read alongside the Cognizance Symbol (COG) on an item record, part of the Navy-unique management-data set (COG, MCC, Special Material Identification Code, and Item Management Code) carried with the National Stock Number. The authoritative letter assignments are defined in NAVSUP P-485 Volume II, Appendix 9, Part I.
Media and Status (M&S) Codes
The Media and Status (M&S) code is a one-character code in record position 7 of MILSTRIP transactions that tells the supply system who should receive status on a requisition or materiel return, and what kind — exception supply status, 100 percent supply status, and/or shipment status. Set by the document originator and perpetuated to every subsequent transaction, it drives DLA Transaction Services (DAAS) status distribution: codes like B, S, and K route status to the requisitioner; D, U, and M route it to the ship-to via the supplementary address; F and Z send it to both; 0 and Y suppress it. Defined in DLM 4000.25, Volume 2, Appendix 7.4.
MILSTRIP Signal Codes
The signal code is a one-character code in record position 51 of MILSTRIP requisition (A-series) and Materiel Returns Program (FT-series) transactions that designates which fields of the document identify the ship-to activity and the bill-to activity (or, on asset reports, the ship-from and credit-to activities). Codes A–D point shipment at the requisitioner; J, K, L, and M point it at the supplementary address; C and L hand the billing address to the fund code; D and M mean free issue. Defined in DLM 4000.25, Volume 2, Appendix 7.10, the signal code remains required under DLMS pending its planned termination.
Mode/Method of Shipment Codes
Mode/Method of Shipment Codes (also called Transportation Mode/Method Codes) are one-character alphanumeric codes from the Defense Transportation Regulation that identify how a shipment moved — the general mode (air, surface, water) and specific method (motor truckload, rail, AMC channel airlift, parcel post, pipeline, customer pickup) for each segment of movement in the Defense Transportation System. The shipper enters the code, normally in record position 77 of MILSTRIP shipment status and materiel release confirmation transactions, and it also rides transportation documentation such as the TCMD.
Navy Cognizance Symbols (COG Codes)
A Navy Cognizance Symbol (COG) is a two-character alphanumeric code prefixed to a National Stock Number that tells a Navy logistician two things at a glance: which stores account the material is carried in (and therefore how it is funded), and which inventory manager / inventory control point has cognizance over the item. The first position is numeric and identifies the stores account — 0 means not carried in a stores account, even digits (2/4/6/8) mean the Appropriation Purchase Account (APA), odd digits (1/3/5/7) mean the Navy Working Capital Fund (NWCF), and 9 is Navy-owned material carried in the NWCF and managed by the Defense Logistics Agency (except 9Q, managed by GSA). The second position is a letter that identifies the cognizant inventory manager. COG is governed by Naval Supply Procedures (NAVSUP P-485).
Routing Identifier Codes (RIC)
A Routing Identifier Code (RIC) is a three-character alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies a unit, activity, or organization that needs to route legacy logistics transactions or receive transactions routed to it (for example, a source of supply), so that those transactions move to and from it through the Defense Automatic Addressing System (DAAS). Unlike a small fixed code set, the RIC registry is a large, dynamic catalog of activity identifiers maintained in the authoritative DoD Activity Address Directory (DoDAAD); every RIC associates to exactly one DoDAAC, and any specific RIC should be resolved live in DAASINQ/eDAASINQ rather than from a fixed list.
Shipment Hold Codes
Shipment Hold Codes are one-character alphabetic codes recorded when MILSTRIP-requisitioned materiel is delayed at a shipping activity after it has been picked, packed, marked, and made ready for shipment. The code names the reason for the delay — consolidation (A), awaiting carrier equipment (B), embargo (F), consignee-requested delay (L), wood-packing-material remediation (W), and so on — and is reported in MILSTRIP shipment status and materiel release confirmation transactions in record position 51. Defined in DLM 4000.25, Volume 2, Appendix 7.17.
Source, Maintenance, and Recoverability (SM&R) Codes
A Source, Maintenance, and Recoverability (SM&R) code is a uniform, joint-Service code assigned to a spare or repair part that tells a maintainer three things at once: how to obtain the item (the two-position Source code), which level of maintenance is authorized to remove/replace/use it and to completely repair it (two single-position Maintenance codes), and what to do with it when it is unserviceable — repair it, where, or condemn it (the one-position Recoverability code). A sixth position carries an optional Service-unique option code. SM&R codes are governed by the joint regulation issued as AR 700-82 / SECNAVINST 4410.23A / AFMAN 21-106 (Joint Regulation Governing the Use and Application of Uniform Source, Maintenance, and Recoverability Codes, 29 August 2020), which also covers the Marine Corps under the SECNAVINST.
Special Material Identification Code (SMIC)
A Special Material Identification Code (SMIC) is a two-position alpha or alphanumeric code, assigned by Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP), that the Navy suffixes to a National Stock Number to identify materiel requiring special technical, quality, configuration, or inventory control — for example items needing source or quality control, configuration control, special procurement/receipt/inspection/storage/handling, weapon-system applicability, or nuclear and SUBSAFE (Level I) controls. It is one of the Navy-unique management-data codes read with the Cognizance Symbol (COG) and the Material Control Code (MCC) on an item record. This reference reproduces the complete authorized SMIC list — all 435 codes — verbatim from NAVSUP P-485 Volume II, Revision 9, Appendix 14.
Supply Condition Codes (SCC)
Supply Condition Codes (SCC) are the single-character codes that classify the serviceability, readiness, and disposition of materiel across the DoD supply system — serviceable (A–D, T, U), unserviceable (E–H, P, S, V), and suspended (J–N, Q, R, X). This is the complete single-character reference, governed by DLM 4000.25 (DLMS), Volume 2, Appendix 2.5, including the Supply Condition Code to Disposal Condition Code relationship used at turn-in to DLA Disposition Services.
Supply Status Codes
Supply Status Codes are the two-character MILSTRIP codes (the "B" and "C" series — BA, BB, BD, BF, BV, CA, CB, CD, CG, CJ and the rest) that a supply source returns on a status transaction to tell a requisitioner what is happening with a requisition: accepted, backordered, substituted, cancelled, or rejected. This reference lists the complete B-, C-, and D-series requisition transaction status code set — all 94 codes — from DLM 4000.25, Volume 2, Appendix 7.16 (Status Codes).
Transportation Control and Movement Document (TCMD)
The Transportation Control and Movement Document (TCMD) is the standard document that controls, documents, and accounts for the movement of a shipment unit through the Defense Transportation System (DTS). It carries the data needed to move and track the shipment — most importantly the 17-character Transportation Control Number (TCN) — and is prepared by the shipping activity (manually as DD Form 1384, or as a machine/EDI transaction) for shipments entering the system. The TCMD is governed by the Defense Transportation Regulation (DTR) 4500.9-R, Part II (Cargo Movement), which absorbed the former MILSTAMP procedures.
Units of Issue (U/I) Codes
Units of Issue (U/I) are two-character codes in the Federal Logistics Information System that state how an item is packaged, counted, or measured for requisitioning and issue — Each (EA), Box (BX), Can (CN), Dozen (DZ), Foot (FT), and dozens more. This reference explains the code set, how Unit of Issue differs from Unit of Measure and Quantity Unit Pack, and where the codes are used across FLIS, FEDLOG, and MILSTRIP.
Weapon System Designator Code (WSDC)
A Weapon System Designator Code (WSDC) is a short alphanumeric code, assigned and/or authorized by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), that associates a cataloged item (its National Stock Number) with the weapon system or end item it supports. Its purpose is to make supply support visible by weapon system: it lets DLA and the military services see which managed parts support which platforms so they can assess weapon-system supply posture and readiness under the DLA Weapon System Support Program (WSSP). The standard WSDC is three characters — the first two are the Weapon System Designator (WSD), which names the system, and the third is a Service/Agency Code identifying the using service (for example A = Army, F = Air Force, N = Navy). The WSDC is one of a family of weapon-system codes carried in Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS) cataloging data alongside the Weapon System Essentiality Code, Weapon System Group Code, and Weapon System Indicator Code.
