Armed Forces Mutual — formerly known as the Army and Air Force Mutual Aid Association (AAFMAA), the name it still carries in some legal and directory contexts — is a nonprofit, Member-owned association that provides life insurance, financial planning, and survivor-assistance services to the U.S. armed forces community. It is not a government system or logistics tool; it is included as an Adjacent quality-of-life/financial resource that logisticians and other service members may use personally.
What it is
Armed Forces Mutual offers life insurance (including term and whole-life products), mortgage and wealth-management services, trust services, and annuities, alongside survivor-assistance support for member families. Membership is granted to individuals who qualify for and purchase a product, most commonly a life insurance policy, and membership lasts for life as long as a policy remains in force. In April 2025 the organization adopted "Armed Forces Mutual" as its public-facing name to better reflect that it serves all military branches, while retaining its historic legal name, American Armed Forces Mutual Aid Association (AAFMAA), for formal purposes.
Who operates it
Armed Forces Mutual is a private, nonprofit, Member-owned mutual aid association — not a U.S. Government agency. It was founded January 13, 1879, as the Army Mutual Aid Association, established by Army officers to support the families of soldiers killed in action, including the aftermath of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Membership eligibility has since expanded well beyond Army officers to cover all ranks and components of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserve, plus current and retired USPHS, NOAA, and Space Force personnel, and adult children of eligible members.
Access
The public website is open to any visitor for information, but products and services (insurance, survivor assistance, member benefits) require qualifying for and purchasing membership. There is no CAC or government-account gate — eligibility is based on military affiliation (active duty, Guard/Reserve, veteran, retiree, or eligible family member) verified during the application process. Prospective members can review eligibility and start an application via the organization's "Become a Member" page.
How logisticians use it
Service members, including logisticians, use Armed Forces Mutual primarily as a personal financial-planning and life-insurance resource: obtaining life insurance coverage tailored to military service (including deployment considerations), accessing survivor-assistance services for bereaved families, and using its Resource Center for guidance on military benefits and entitlements. It functions alongside — not as part of — official DoD benefits systems such as SGLI/VGLI.
Related systems
Armed Forces Mutual is one of several military-affiliated mutual aid and financial-services associations serving the armed forces community; it is distinct from official DoD-administered benefit programs and from other nonprofit military service organizations.
