Army Knowledge On-Line Portal AKO

Army Knowledge Online (AKO) was the U.S. Army's enterprise web portal — a secure hub for email, single sign-on, collaboration, and knowledge sharing — operational from 1998 until it was decommissioned in 2021. It is retired: the directory's stored URL (us.army.mil) no longer resolves, and there is no active successor portal at that address.

What it was

Over roughly 23 years, AKO grew into one of the Army's largest intranets. At its peak during the COVID-19 period it drew over 1.5 million unique visitors monthly, and more than 700 Army applications depended on AKO accounts for user databases and notifications.

Who operated it

AKO's sunset was managed by the Enterprise Content Collaboration and Messaging (EC2M) product office under Program Executive Office Enterprise Information Systems (PEO EIS). That office handled the shutdown month's asset removal, documentation updates, file and email migration, and records-management compliance.

Access

AKO stopped being accessible to users at the end of June 2021, and the program officially closed on 26 July 2021. The stored primary URL (us.army.mil) is dead — it does not resolve. There is no current public or CAC-gated portal at that address to redirect to.

How logisticians use it (now)

Logisticians who relied on AKO for email, single sign-on, or knowledge-sharing should use their current Army enterprise credentials and platforms (Army 365 for email/collaboration; milSuite for CAC-enabled professional networking and knowledge sharing) rather than looking for an AKO login.
