ASSIST (Acquisition Streamlining and Standardization Information System) is the U.S. Department of Defense's official repository of defense and federal specifications and standards. Its public ASSIST-QuickSearch interface, at quicksearch.dla.mil, lets anyone search and download current and historical military specifications (MIL-SPEC), military standards (MIL-STD), handbooks (MIL-HDBK), and federal specifications/standards without creating an account.

What it is

ASSIST is the primary user interface of the Defense Standardization Program (DSP) and the official source of the military and federal specifications and standards cited on DoD contracts, containing well over 100,000 standardization documents. ASSIST-QuickSearch is the public-facing search tool: users can search by document number, document ID, keyword (in titles, keywords, or scope), Federal Supply Classification (FSC), date range, or document status (active, inactive, canceled, etc.), and download the associated PDF. The full ASSIST application (assist.dla.mil) adds account-based features — including CAC login — for standardization management activities such as document coordination and workflow, but basic document search and retrieval through QuickSearch requires no login.

Who operates it

The Defense Standardization Program Office (DSPO) owns ASSIST and is responsible for its management, in coordination with the Defense Standardization Program Automation Office (DSPAO) in Philadelphia, PA, which handles day-to-day system operation. The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) — through DLA J6/DLA Document Services — provides the technology hosting and help desk support for the system, including the quicksearch.dla.mil and assist.dla.mil domains.

Access

ASSIST-QuickSearch is fully public at quicksearch.dla.mil — no registration or login is required to search for or download specifications and standards. The full ASSIST application at assist.dla.mil supports account registration (with CAC login as an alternative) for users who need workflow, coordination, or document-management functions beyond basic search. The ASSIST help desk (215-737-8000, Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–4:30 PM EST) handles account questions such as registering, login, unlocking, and password reset, as well as document search support.

How logisticians use it

Contracting officers, engineers, and logistics personnel use ASSIST-QuickSearch to pull the current, authoritative version of a specification or standard referenced in a contract, technical data package, or requirements document; confirm whether that document is active, canceled, or superseded; and download the PDF for reference or compliance purposes. This is the standard first stop for verifying a MIL-STD or MIL-SPEC citation before acting on it.

Related systems

ASSIST sits under the Defense Standardization Program, which governs the broader set of DoD/federal specifications and standards that many logistics processes reference — for example, packaging and preservation standards used across the DoD supply chain.
