Federal Logistics Information Services FLIS

The Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS) is the Defense Logistics Agency's authoritative catalog of items of supply — the database of National Stock Numbers (NSNs) and the item names, part/reference numbers, supplier (CAGE) data, and characteristics records that identify and describe every cataloged item in the DoD supply chain. Logisticians reach FLIS data through three products with different access levels: WebFLIS and FED LOG for authorized government and industry users, and PUB LOG for free public access to unrestricted data.

What it is

FLIS is the system of record for federal cataloging — it underlies National Stock Number assignment and holds the reference data (item identification, CAGE/supplier cross-references, freight and characteristics data, interchangeability and substitutability groupings) used throughout DoD and allied supply chains. It is described by DLA as forming the foundation for all federal logistics information systems, covering millions of catalogued supply items used by the U.S. government and NATO partners.

Who operates it

FLIS is maintained by DLA Logistics Information Services, part of DLA's Information Operations (J6) directorate, headquartered at the Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center in Battle Creek, Michigan. This organization is responsible for creating and maintaining NSNs for the Department of Defense, other federal agencies, civilian agencies, and international allies.

Access

Access to FLIS data depends on which product a user needs. PUB LOG distributes publicly releasable FLIS data (NSN records, Federal Supply Classification data, CAGE code listings) free of charge, updated monthly, with no CAC or subscription required — available to government, industry (including Original Equipment Manufacturers), Foreign Military Sales customers, and the general public via DLA's FLIS Data Electronic Reading Room. WebFLIS and FED LOG, which provide more current and complete cataloging data (including historical/inactive NSN records), require an authorized account: CAC-enabled users request a WebFLIS role through DLA's Account Management and Provisioning System (AMPS) at amps.dla.mil. How logisticians use it

Logisticians and supply personnel use FLIS-derived data daily to identify items by NSN, verify or research part/reference numbers and their manufacturers, confirm CAGE code supplier information, and pull the management and characteristics data needed for requisitioning, cataloging, and supply support decisions. Contracting and industry users rely on PUB LOG's free public extract for NSN and CAGE lookups without needing a DoD-sponsored account.

Related systems

FLIS data is the foundation behind WebFLIS, FED LOG, and PUB LOG (the three access products described above), and behind CAGE code assignment. It connects to the broader Federal Catalog System and to DLA's account provisioning system, AMPS, which governs who can access the authenticated tools.
