Federal Procurement and Contract Data System

The Federal Procurement Data System (FPDS) was the U.S. government's system of record for federal contract-action data. As of February 24, 2026, GSA decommissioned FPDS.gov's public search tool (ezSearch), and all contract award data and search functionality have moved to SAM.gov. Logisticians and contracting professionals who previously used fpds.gov now search and report on the same underlying contract-action data through SAM.gov.

What it is

FPDS-NG (FPDS Next Generation) was the government-wide system that captured contract-action reports from federal agencies — who bought what, from which vendor, and for how much. That underlying contract award data has not disappeared; GSA migrated it into SAM.gov's Contracting/Contract Data search, and legacy FPDS ATOM feed consumers are being moved to the SAM.gov Contract Awards API (documented at open.gsa.gov).

Who operates it

GSA operates SAM.gov, which now hosts the contract award data and search functions formerly provided by FPDS.gov. GSA's official announcements confirm both the February 24, 2026 ezSearch decommissioning and the migration of search/reporting to SAM.gov.

Access

The old public URL (fpds.gov/fpdsng_cms) 301-redirects to SAM.gov. Searching contract award data on SAM.gov requires a SAM.gov user account (Login.gov-based); GSA states no special role or authorization is needed to register, just an account. Users who want contract/award data without creating a SAM.gov account can use USAspending.gov, which provides public search and bulk downloads of federal award data without a login requirement.

How logisticians use it

Contracting officers, acquisition analysts, and program logisticians use this data to research past contract actions — identifying which vendors were awarded which contracts, at what value, under which contract vehicle — to inform market research, incumbent analysis, and spend analysis. This use case is unchanged by the FPDS-to-SAM.gov migration; only the access point moved.

History & lineage

FPDS-NG was GSA's long-standing contract-action reporting system, with ezSearch serving as its free public search interface. GSA's stated modernization effort consolidates legacy procurement systems into SAM.gov; GSA has also indicated plans to migrate the Contractor Performance Assessment Reporting System (CPARS) into SAM.gov in the same effort.

Related systems

Now effectively superseded by SAM.gov's Contracting/Contract Data search and the SAM.gov Contract Awards API. USAspending.gov remains a separate, login-free public source for award and spending data. SAM.gov also hosts entity registration and CAGE-related data used alongside contract award research.
