LAGGING MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION AND NIINS

Lagging Material Identification and NIINs is a LogTool-hosted reference document listing shipboard lagging (insulation covering) materials and their National Item Identification Numbers (NIINs), for Navy shipboard maintenance personnel identifying and requisitioning the correct insulation materials. It is a document LogTool distributes for download, not an external government database or live lookup tool.

What it is

"Lagging" refers to the protective outer covering — typically fibrous glass cloth — applied over thermal insulation on shipboard piping, machinery, and hull surfaces. Navy requirements for this insulation and lagging are set by MIL-STD-769 (Insulation Requirements for U.S. Naval Vessels) and implemented through NAVSEA Standard Item 009-11 ("Insulation and Lagging"), which specifies materials such as rewettable fibrous glass cloth lagging conforming to MIL-C-20079 and polyimide foam insulation conforming to MIL-DTL-24688 for piping and machinery systems. This LogTool document compiles lagging material names against their NIINs so maintenance personnel can identify and order the correct item.
