Library of Congress Country Studies On-Line

Library of Congress Country Studies On-Line is a digital collection of 80 country/regional handbooks — formerly the U.S. Army's "Area Handbook" series — produced by the Library of Congress Federal Research Division under agreement with the Department of the Army. Each volume profiles a country's history, society, economy, government, and national-security institutions. It is a general-reference resource for background on a country or region, not a logistics system, and the series has not been updated since the mid-2000s.

What it is

The Country Studies series (Country Studies/Area Handbook Program) consists of 109 titles covering roughly 140 sovereign states and 15 dependencies, written by multidisciplinary teams of social scientists for a general audience. Most volumes cover a single country; a few cover multiple countries or a region. The stated purpose was to give readers — including deploying military personnel — descriptive and analytical background on countries where U.S. forces might operate. The series retains volumes on states that no longer exist in their studied form (e.g., Czechoslovakia, East Germany, the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Sudan) because the Library judges them to still hold historical value. Content in each study reflects the analysis of its individual authors and is not an official U.S. government position.

Who operates it

The Library of Congress Federal Research Division (FRD) produced the series under a reimbursable agreement with the U.S. Army; the studies were published in hard copy roughly 1986–1998, with FRD later hosting electronic versions. Federal funding for new studies lapsed after fiscal year 2004; FRD has stated that in the absence of renewed appropriations no additional titles or updates can be produced. The collection is now maintained as an archival digital collection on the Library of Congress website.

Public and free, no account or login required. The collection's original host address, lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/cshome.html, has been retired; the studies are now published at the Library of Congress's Country Studies digital collection (loc.gov/collections/country-studies/). How logisticians use it

Logistics and planning staff use the studies as background reading on a country's infrastructure, governance, and security context ahead of a deployment or exercise — not as an operational or supply-chain data source. Because most volumes date to the 1980s–2000s and were never revised after FRD funding lapsed, the country-specific facts (leadership, infrastructure, current events) are frequently out of date; the series is best read as historical/background context, corroborated against current sources for anything time-sensitive.
