Military OneSource (militaryonesource.mil) is a Department of War-funded support program that gives active-duty, National Guard, and Reserve service members and their families 24/7 access to confidential non-medical counseling, financial and legal consultations, relocation (PCS) support, spouse career resources, tax preparation (MilTax), and other quality-of-life referrals. It is a member/family support resource rather than a materiel-logistics tool, but its relocation and household-goods-move resources make it logistics-adjacent for anyone helping a service member plan a PCS.
What it is
Military OneSource is a 24/7/365 information and referral hub covering military life topics: relocation and PCS planning, deployment, financial counseling, non-medical counseling, spouse employment (SpouseWorks), childcare, and free tax filing through MilTax. Support is delivered by phone, secure live chat, and a public website; some interactive tools and case-specific services require creating a login.
Who operates it
Military OneSource is a program of the Department of Defense, which since September 2025 has used "Department of War" as an authorized secondary title (the statutory legal name remains Department of Defense pending any act of Congress). It is run under the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for Military Community and Family Policy (MC&FP). The department has historically delivered the program's contact-center and counseling services through a contracted provider rather than operating the call center directly with military staff.
Access
Public and free to the eligible military community — no CAC or account is required to browse the website or call the contact center. Full service eligibility covers active-duty, National Guard, and Reserve members of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard; their immediate family members and legal guardians of their children; wounded warriors and caregivers; survivors of deceased service members; military academy cadets; and recently separated or retired members for up to 365 days after separation. An account/login is used for the secure live-chat feature and for personalized tools, created via the site's own SSO login page rather than a DoD-wide credential.
How logisticians use it
Logisticians and support staff point service members toward Military OneSource primarily for PCS and relocation planning — moving timelines, entitlements questions, and household-goods-move guidance that complements (but is separate from) the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil, which has its own help desk. It is not used for materiel tracking, supply, or transportation-management functions; its value to the logistics community is as the standard referral point for the personal/family side of a move or deployment.
Related systems
Closely related to the Defense Personal Property System (DPS/move.mil) for household-goods shipments during a PCS, and to installation Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) and family-readiness programs, which Military OneSource frequently refers users to for local, in-person support.
