MSDS Search, as listed here, points to VelocityEHS (formerly branded MSDSonline), a commercial online library of Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) — formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs). It is a private-sector reference, not a Department of Defense system. For DoD logisticians, the authoritative federal source for SDSs remains the Defense Logistics Agency's Hazardous Materials Information Resource System (HMIRS).
What it is
SDSs document the hazards, handling, storage, and emergency measures for hazardous chemicals. VelocityEHS operates a commercial SDS database used by general industry. The original directory URL for this entry (msdsonline.com/msds-search) no longer resolves; the msdsonline.com domain now redirects to ehs.com, and the vendor's current SDS search resource is hosted there.
Who operates it
The service is operated by VelocityEHS, the company that acquired and rebranded MSDSonline. VelocityEHS is a private EHS (environment, health, and safety) software and services vendor, not a federal agency or DoD component.
Access
VelocityEHS publishes some free reference content (a data-sheet index and a glossary of terms) without login, but the company states that full access to search and retrieve SDSs requires creating an account. This is a commercial, subscription-oriented product — not a public federal database. Prospective users can request contact through the vendor's own contact page.
How logisticians use it
Logisticians and HAZMAT personnel look up SDSs to handle, store, ship, and dispose of hazardous materials correctly. Within DoD, HMIRS is the system of record for SDS data tied to NSNs and government-unique HAZCOM/transportation information; commercial libraries like VelocityEHS's may be used for general industrial lookups but are not authoritative for government logistics purposes.
