Naval Medical Logistics Command

Naval Medical Logistics Command (NMLC) is a U.S. Navy Medicine organization that procures, manages, and distributes medical and dental equipment and supplies for Navy ships and military treatment facilities worldwide. It was reorganized in May 2022: the former top-level NMLC at Fort Detrick, Maryland, became a subordinate detachment, while the former Navy Expeditionary Medical Support Command (NEMSCOM) at Cheatham Annex, Williamsburg, Virginia, was elevated and renamed Naval Medical Readiness Logistics Command (NMRLC) — the current parent command. What it is

Who operates it

The command is part of U.S. Navy Medicine, under the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED). Following the May 2022 reorganization, Naval Medical Readiness Logistics Command (NMRLC), headquartered at Cheatham Annex in Williamsburg, Virginia, is the senior command (Echelon IV). The former Naval Medical Logistics Command at Fort Detrick, Maryland, is now a subordinate detachment (Echelon V) under NMRLC, alongside a detachment in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The former Naval Ophthalmic Support and Training Activity (NOSTRA) was folded into NMRLC as a directorate rather than continuing as a separate command. NMRLC is described in official reporting as a joint command that includes both Navy and Army personnel.

How logisticians use it

Navy medical logistics personnel, fleet Type Commanders' Health Services Support staffs, and Military Treatment Facility supply officers work with NMRLC/NMLC to acquire, track, and refresh authorized medical allowance lists, to outfit new-construction and in-service ships with required medical equipment before deployment, and to move expeditionary medical logistics packages (including mobile hospital platforms and Class VIII supplies) to support operational theaters and hospital ship readiness.

History & lineage

NMLC previously operated as its own top-level Navy Medicine logistics command at Fort Detrick, Maryland. In May 2022, the Navy restructured Navy Medicine's expeditionary and logistics commands: Navy Expeditionary Medical Support Command (NEMSCOM) at Williamsburg, Virginia, was redesignated Naval Medical Readiness Logistics Command (NMRLC) and elevated to Echelon IV status, while NMLC Fort Detrick was reassigned as a subordinate Echelon V detachment reporting to the new NMRLC. NOSTRA was disestablished as an independent command and absorbed as an NMRLC directorate.
