NAVSUP Global Logistics Support GLS

NAVSUP Global Logistics Support (NAVSUP GLS) was a Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) subordinate command that provided worldwide integrated logistics and contracting services to Navy and Joint operational units. It was disestablished effective April 1, 2018, and its functions were absorbed elsewhere in the NAVSUP enterprise — logisticians searching for it today should look to NAVSUP Headquarters and the individual NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Centers (FLCs) instead.

What it was

NAVSUP GLS was an Echelon III command headquartered in San Diego. It traced its lineage to Commander, Fleet and Industrial Supply Centers (COMFISCS), established in 2006 and later renamed NAVSUP GLS. Its role was oversight of waterfront support performance and management of the NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center network's contracting, fuels, global logistics services, hazardous material management, household goods movement support, and integrated logistics functions.

Who operated it

Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) operated NAVSUP GLS as an intermediate command layer between NAVSUP Headquarters (Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania) and the individual Fleet Logistics Centers.

Why it was decommissioned

Effective April 1, 2018, NAVSUP disestablished NAVSUP GLS. Its functions were realigned directly to NAVSUP Headquarters, and each of NAVSUP's eight Fleet Logistics Centers was redesignated as its own Echelon III command reporting directly to NAVSUP Headquarters rather than through NAVSUP GLS. The NAVSUP Ammunition Logistics Center and the Naval Petroleum Office, which had reported to NAVSUP GLS, were also realigned to NAVSUP Headquarters. NAVSUP stated the change removed an intermediate layer of command to improve oversight, customer alignment, and delivery speed.

Logisticians looking for the services NAVSUP GLS used to coordinate should go directly to NAVSUP Headquarters (navsup.navy.mil) or to the relevant NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center for their region (for example, FLC Norfolk, FLC San Diego, FLC Jacksonville, FLC Pearl Harbor, or FLC Sigonella), each of which now operates as an independent Echelon III command for contracting, fuels, household goods, and integrated logistics support in its area.
