NAVSUP P-485, Naval Supply Procedures, is the Navy's governing publication for supply management procedures, published in three volumes: Volume I (Afloat Supply), Volume II (Supply Appendices), and Volume III (Ashore Supply). "NAVSUP P-485 Online" refers to accessing this publication through NAVSUP's online systems rather than a printed copy — the manual itself, not a separate tool, is what a visitor is looking for.
What it is
NAVSUP P-485 establishes the policies and procedures for operating and managing supply departments across the fleet's operational forces. Volume I covers afloat (shipboard) supply procedures — requisitioning, receipt, stowage, inventory, and financial management. Volume II contains supply appendices, including many of the codes (such as material control codes, cognizance symbols, and related identifiers) that Navy supply personnel look up daily. Volume III covers ashore supply procedures. The procedures in the publication are described as mandatory minimum-essential supply management procedures unless a section is explicitly marked optional.
Who operates it
NAVSUP P-485 is issued and maintained by the Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP). Historically, management and maintenance responsibility for the publication has resided with a NAVSUP headquarters supply-policy directorate (referred to as N3/4 or N4 in different editions).
Access
NAVSUP P-485 is distributed online through NAVSUP's internal enterprise web systems rather than a public download page. The Navy's primary online publication-distribution portal for NAVSUP instructions and publications is the Naval Logistics Library (NLL), reachable from the NAVSUP homepage; NLL access requires either a Common Access Card (CAC) for basic restricted search, or a full account (registered via a System Authorization Access Request, SAAR, plus CAC login) for ordering and full document access. Separately, NAVSUP's enterprise web applications — including the system this directory's current link points to — were migrated to a NAVSUP AWS GovCloud (NAG)-hosted domain (`mynavsup.nag.navy.mil`), which is a CAC/PKI-gated U.S. Government information system, not a public download. Neither system returns content to an unauthenticated public visitor.
How logisticians use it
Navy supply personnel — afloat supply officers, logistics specialists, and shore-based supply department staff — use NAVSUP P-485 as their governing reference for day-to-day supply procedures and to look up the codes defined in its appendices (e.g., material control codes, cognizance symbols, and other supply data elements referenced elsewhere on this site).
Related systems
NAVSUP P-485 is the source publication behind several Navy supply code-reference pages on this site (including cognizance symbol and material control code references). It is distributed through the Naval Logistics Library, a separate NAVSUP publication-distribution system also covered in this directory.
