TRICARE (tricare.mil) is the Department of Defense's uniformed services health care program, covering active duty service members and families, National Guard and Reserve members and families, retirees and retiree families, survivors, and certain former spouses worldwide. It is managed by the Defense Health Agency (DHA) under the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. The public tricare.mil site is freely browsable for plan and benefits information; enrolling or managing coverage requires a separate authenticated login.
What it is
TRICARE combines the direct care of military hospitals and clinics in the Military Health System with a network of civilian health care providers. It covers health plans (TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Select, and others), prescriptions, dental plans, and special programs, and is structured around three regions: East, West, and Overseas. Most TRICARE health plans meet the Affordable Care Act's minimum essential coverage requirement.
Who operates it
The Defense Health Agency (DHA), a DoD combat support agency, manages and oversees TRICARE's integrated health care delivery system. In the U.S. regions, DHA contracts with regional managed-care support contractors — Humana Military for the East Region and TriWest Healthcare Alliance for the West Region — to administer networks and process claims; DHA's TRICARE Health Plan Office handles escalations the regional contractors can't resolve (e.g., Prime Travel Benefit approvals, TRICARE Prime Remote eligibility determinations).
Access
The public tricare.mil site — plan descriptions, eligibility rules, covered-services information, FAQs, and the newsroom — requires no login. Managing an actual TRICARE benefit is a separate, authenticated layer: beneficiaries verify and update eligibility in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and enroll or change plans through Beneficiary Web Enrollment (BWE), reached via the DoD's milConnect portal. milConnect access requires a Common Access Card (CAC), DS Logon, or the newer myAuth credential — not a general public account. Because the informational site and the beneficiary self-service layer have different access requirements, this entry is best understood as public-information access to the program, with CAC/DS Logon-gated self-service for actual benefit transactions.
How logisticians use it
TRICARE itself is a health benefit, not a materiel or supply-chain logistics system — it sits in LogTool's directory as a quality-of-life resource federal and military logisticians (and their families) rely on directly, alongside the tools they use professionally. Personnel researching eligibility, plan options, regional contractor contacts, or the enrollment process use tricare.mil as the authoritative source rather than secondary summaries.
Related systems
TRICARE's self-service functions are closely tied to DEERS (eligibility system of record) and milConnect (the DoD portal that fronts DEERS updates and Beneficiary Web Enrollment). It is also administratively related to the separate TRICARE beneficiary patient-portal login pathway that LogTool tracks as its own directory entry.
