US Department of State Travel Warnings

Travel.State.Gov is the official U.S. Department of State site for international travel safety information, including country-by-country Travel Advisories, passport and visa services, and emergency assistance for Americans abroad. It is operated by the Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs. The directory's older "Travel Warnings, Public Announcements, and Consular Information Sheets" terminology has been retired; the Department now uses a four-level Travel Advisory system.

What it is

The site's Travel Advisories section (travel.state.gov/traveladvisories) rates every country on a four-level scale — Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions, Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, Level 3: Reconsider Travel, Level 4: Do Not Travel — plus risk indicators for categories such as crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health, natural disaster, and wrongful detention. Level 1–2 advisories are reviewed at least annually and Level 3–4 advisories at least semi-annually. The Department also issues a standing "Worldwide Caution" alert and destination-specific alerts for acute events (e.g., natural disasters, civil unrest). The broader site covers passport applications/renewals, visa information, and the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), through which travelers can register with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate to receive safety updates.

How logisticians use it

Federal and military logistics personnel supporting overseas travel, contractor movements, or OCONUS operations use the Travel Advisory levels and destination-specific alerts as a standing input to travel-risk decisions and duty-of-care planning, alongside official duty-travel systems (e.g., the Defense Travel System) rather than in place of them. It is a general-purpose federal travel-safety reference rather than a logistics-specific system.
