Distribution Standard System DSS MRO Tracking System

The DSS Materiel Tracker (also called the DSS MRO Tracker) is a free, no-login web lookup tool that lets logisticians check the shipment status of a Materiel Release Order (MRO) processed through the Defense Logistics Agency's Distribution Standard System. Enter an order or document identifier and the tool returns the Transportation Control Number (TCN), carrier tracking number, and origin/destination data for material released from — or reported to — DLA's defense depots and some Direct Delivery Vendors. It is operated by DLA Distribution, the DLA major subordinate command that runs the agency's depot and warehousing network.

What it is

The Distribution Standard System (DSS) is DLA's core warehouse-management platform, handling receiving, storage, consolidation, packing, shipping, inventory, inspection, and workload management across the DLA depot network. DSS was adopted DoD-wide starting in the 1990s as the single standard distribution system, replacing several legacy service-specific systems, with early implementation and testing centered at the Eastern Distribution Center in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. The Materiel Tracker is a public-facing reporting layer built on top of DSS: it does not let a user manage or modify a shipment, only look up its status once DLA has released or received the associated materiel.

DLA Distribution — DLA's distribution and depot-operations command, headquartered at New Cumberland, Pennsylvania — owns and operates both DSS and the Materiel Tracker front end. Access

DLA's own applications listing states that no customer account is required to use the Materiel Tracker — it is intended as an open lookup tool for anyone tracking a DLA-managed shipment, not a CAC- or account-gated portal.

How logisticians use it

Requisitioners, unit supply personnel, and DLA customer account representatives use the Materiel Tracker as a self-service alternative to calling a help desk when a requisition has been released from a depot but the customer wants to confirm it actually moved, and wants the carrier tracking number and TCN to hand off to a receiving activity or follow with the carrier directly. Because it draws on DSS depot-release and receipt data rather than the requisition's supply-status history, it is typically used after a materiel release, alongside broader status tools (such as MILSTRIP-based requisition status or the DLA "Find Your Order" self-help path) rather than in place of them.

History & lineage

DSS traces to a 1990 DoD decision to consolidate multiple service distribution systems into one standard platform, based on an enhanced version of the Army's Area Oriented Depot Modernization system. The Materiel Tracker itself is a later public-facing reporting tool layered on DSS to expose shipment status data without requiring depot-system access.
